In 2022 Banco Cetelem Brazil deployed IDEMIA GREENPAY as its Card Personalization solution to issue recycled PVC payment cards and formalize sustainable card issuance across its partner network. The deployment is part of an operational shift that began in August 2021 to migrate the card base to sustainable materials and to standardize issuance workflows under the IDEMIA GREENPAY program.
The implementation focused on card production and personalization capabilities typical of the Card Personalization category, including material certification and controlled production workflows for recycled PVC cards, serialized personalization, and packaging and fulfillment processes aligned to sustainability requirements. IDEMIA GREENPAY was used to certify and track recycled plastic content, reduce per card plastic usage by 3.18 grams relative to the prior model, and support production process adjustments that lower water use and energy consumption.
Operational integrations were extended into Banco Cetelem Brazil business channels and customer touchpoints, leveraging digital invoicing and loan acquisition flows, digital card issuance with digital signatures, QRcode-enabled card contracts, and onboarding communications via WhatsApp and SMS to ensure carrier delivery and reduce physical waste. The rollout targeted Banco Cetelem Brazil distribution across more than 30 partners nationwide, including supermarkets and e-commerce partners, enabling card issuance through existing commercial channels.
Governance and rollout were articulated by executive leadership with a staged timeline, next year all new cards will be made out of recycled plastic and within five years the entire customer base is planned to hold a sustainable card. Reported outcomes include an estimated reduction of 2.7 tons of CO2 emissions in 2021 and a further 5 tons by the end of 2022, lower water and energy usage in production, and complementary paper reduction actions that reduced paper consumption approximately 55 percent versus three years prior.
