In 2016, Big River Steel commissioned SMS X-Pact MES as part of the SMS Group delivery of its advanced CSP plant. SMS X-Pact MES and the SMS X-Pact automation were installed to provide primary production planning and control at plant startup, operating within the Manufacturing ERP category to manage process data and quality tracking across the US facility.
The deployment used SMS X-Pact MES 4.0 to instrument end-to-end process data capture, production planning and sequencing workflows, and quality data tracking, integrated with the automation layer delivered by SMS. Functional capabilities implemented include MES production planning and control, process data collection, and quality traceability, configured to run as the operational execution layer for the continuous slab casting and rolling processes at the plant.
SMS and partners, including Noodle.ai, later integrated AI modules on top of SMS X-Pact MES to optimize sequencing, yield and energy consumption, with SMS describing those modules as embedded in the plant MES environment. The resulting architecture combines an automation control layer, SMS X-Pact MES as the Manufacturing ERP execution layer, and AI analytics modules that consume MES data streams to influence sequencing and process setpoints.
The solution took over production planning and control at go-live, centralizing workflow orchestration and providing a single operational environment for process and quality data within the plant. Governance and operational coordination were organized around plant-level MES operations, aligning automation engineers and production planners to enforced production workflows and quality tracking in the plant.
