| OpenResty | Legacy | OpenResty ENTERPRISE | Apps Development | PaaS | n/a | 2021 | 2021 |
In 2021, Bilibili Inc. deployed OpenResty ENTERPRISE to diagnose and resolve a production gateway incident in China where an infinite loop in Lua code caused 100% CPU utilization and disrupted service availability. The deployment used OpenResty XRay within OpenResty ENTERPRISE as part of an Apps Development diagnostic capability applied directly to the gateway runtime.
XRay's Lua/C flame graphs were the primary functional module used to pinpoint the root cause, isolating the recursive Lua execution path responsible for CPU saturation. The engagement leveraged native Lua runtime instrumentation and C layer sampling to produce function level profiling and call stack visibility that identified the exact code path needing remediation.
The operational scope centered on the production gateway in China and the infrastructure and operations teams accountable for gateway reliability and incident response. OpenResty XRay ran against the live gateway runtime to provide visibility into request handling, Lua handlers, and runtime execution context without introducing additional middleware components.
OpenResty documented the incident and resolution as a real world XRay engagement, and Bilibili applied subsequent hardening and improved operational visibility as described in the engagement report. The forensic use of OpenResty XRay restored service availability and resulted in documented changes to diagnostics and operational governance for gateway operations.
