In 2015 BJSS Limited deployed Amazon Redshift as a Data Warehouse to anchor large scale data consolidation and migration work. The Redshift Data Warehouse was constructed alongside complex staging and replication environments that originated from multiple Oracle source databases tied to HSCIC Spine projects.
Implementation included a staging architecture where seven Oracle 10gR2 source databases totaling approximately 60TB were combined into a single Oracle 11g RAC using RMAN and Transportable Tablespaces, with Oracle GoldenGate providing ongoing synchronization for delta migration. This RAC staging environment on SPARC Solaris was designed and built to feed downstream targets, and Amazon Redshift served as the central analytical store.
Python based ETL processes were developed to load and extract data to and from Amazon Redshift, built to scale out through parallel processing and to accept inputs from any connectable RDBMS, CSV files, AWS S3, and REST services. The same Python ETL codebase was used for data quality operations and to seed other data migrations, enabling functional coverage across ingestion, transformation, and data quality.
Operational integrations spanned a mix of relational and NoSQL platforms, including Oracle GoldenGate replication to support delta capture, Riak NoSQL as a migration target, Percona MySQL 5.6 twin data centre replication for DR, and a subsequent migration to Amazon RDS MySQL in a Multi AZ configuration with additional replication across VPCs. Platform evolution also included a blue green migration from MySQL to MariaDB and a two site EDB Postgres Advanced Server installation complemented by load balancing, replication, and failover.
Project governance and delivery were driven by technical lead and DBA ownership for design, build, and operational support, including repurposing the Spine migration platform to support an Identity Management migration into the Care Identity Service and providing tech lead services on a large scale retail consolidation into PaaS and SaaS targets. Amazon Redshift functioned as the central Data Warehouse component within this multi platform landscape, with ETL parallelization, replication topologies, and DR configurations forming the core operational controls.
