| Amazon Web Services (AWS) | Legacy | Amazon Redshift | Data Warehouse | Analytics and BI | n/a | 2020 | 2020 |
In 2020, Blackline Safety implemented Amazon Redshift as part of a Data Warehouse initiative on Amazon Web Services to modernize its high volume streaming analytics and reporting. The project was driven by rapid growth in connected G7 wearable devices and an urgent requirement to support industrial contact tracing amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
Blackline Safety re-architected elements of its platform to ingest, process and store high velocity telemetry. The implementation layered Amazon Kinesis for high throughput collection, Amazon EMR for stream processing and Delta Lake within a data lake architecture to provide cohesive streaming and scalable storage, with Amazon Redshift serving as the Data Warehouse for reporting and analytics. The engineering scope included AWS load balancers and targeted troubleshooting to resolve partner constraints, and it addressed a planned shift in device reporting frequency from once every five minutes to once every ten seconds, a 30x interval increase.
Onica, a Rackspace Technology company and AWS Premier Consulting Partner, worked with Blackline to build the ingestion and enrichment pipeline and to assemble workflows that route enriched data into Amazon Redshift for downstream use. The integrated solution supports use cases such as automated contact tracing reporting, mapping of gas leaks, equipment usage dashboards, alert type visualization and compliance reporting for equipment testing and calibration. Dataflow and storage configurations were designed to preserve message integrity during ingestion and enrichment so reporting consumers receive high value, query ready datasets in Amazon Redshift.
Operational governance centered on the Blackline Vision data science team and strict user access controls to ensure per client data isolation and designated user access to sensitive contact tracing outputs. The rollout emphasized process changes for data routing, enrichment logic and reporting access, with the platform architecture enabling rapid deployment of contact tracing visualizations across industrial sites including refineries and power plants. Infrastructure ownership and troubleshooting procedures were formalized with Onica and internal operations to support ongoing platform scalability.
As implemented, Amazon Redshift and the supporting AWS streaming and lake components enabled higher data rate reporting from Blackline wearables and the launch of highly visual, interactive industrial contact tracing infrastructure. The deployment positioned Blackline Safety to deliver more granular analytics to clients while keeping contact tracing data strictly governed and accessible only to designated users.
