In 2023, Blackrock Health implemented MEDITECH Expanse EHR as the cornerstone of a €25 million digital transformation across its four sites, Blackrock, Galway, Hermitage and Limerick Clinics, covering approximately 325,000 patients annually and scheduled as a three year, group wide rollout that will create 60 new jobs. The MEDITECH Expanse implementation is explicitly positioned as an Electronic Health Record to unify patient data into a single health record accessible at any clinic, and to provide clinicians with a comprehensive longitudinal view of patient history to support clinical decision making.
The MEDITECH Expanse electronic health record deployment emphasizes clinical modules and point of care capabilities, enabling clinicians to view patient records, place orders, and document care via mobile devices using a location agnostic architecture. Functional capabilities called out in the programme include unified patient record access across sites, decision support oriented access to patient history, order entry and clinical documentation workflows, and patient facing access to records to support cross site attendance and continuity of care.
Blackrock Health will pair MEDITECH Expanse with Ireland’s first integrated digital engagement platform that enables connectivity between patients, consultants and general practitioners, providing a direct channel for follow up information to be made available to a patient’s GP. The rollout scope covers clinicians and administrative staff across all four clinics, and the implementation model prioritizes mobile access for physicians, nurses and other clinicians to support in clinic and remote workflows.
Governance and operational change will be staged over the three year programme with a group wide adoption approach that builds on MEDITECH EHR experience in Galway Clinic from 2017. The stated outcomes for the programme are enhanced clinical care, improved patient safety, reduced administration burden and freeing up clinician time, all tied to the Electronic Health Record and the integrated digital engagement platform investments.
