In 2020, Bone and Joint Institute of Tennessee transitioned to athenaOne and deployed the Electronic Health Record across its orthopedic practice to centralize clinical documentation and streamline revenue cycle processes. The implementation was driven by CEO Darren Harris and leadership intent on reducing manual billing handoffs and improving operational visibility for a roughly 100-person specialty group.
The athenaOne deployment leveraged athenahealth’s cloud-based clinical record, revenue cycle management, and patient engagement capabilities, with configuration focused on structured clinical documentation, claims workflow orchestration, and denial management. athenaOne’s revenue cycle management module was used to simplify billing rules, automate first-pass adjudication, and standardize patient engagement workflows for scheduling and collections, reducing manual reconciliations previously performed by a third-party business office.
Operationally the implementation unified front-desk intake, clinical charting, and billing queues so clinical and administrative teams shared a common patient record and claim status visibility. Integrations emphasized data continuity between clinical records and the RCM processes, enabling in-practice billing operations to replace reliance on a separate third-party business office and to route claim denials into centralized workflows for rapid resolution.
Governance concentrated on workflow standardization and centralized billing oversight, with executive sponsorship from the CEO to accelerate adoption and tighten denial handling processes. Outcomes reported after the athenaOne rollout included close to a 20 percent increase in collections per RVU, a materially improved first-pass resolve rate, and an average denial rate of 6 percent compared to a 9 percent mean denial rate across the athenahealth network.
