In 2021, Community Hospital McCook deployed Cohesity DataProtect as its Backup as a Service (BaaS) solution to consolidate and simplify enterprise backup and recovery. Community Hospital McCook is a critical access healthcare provider serving southwest Nebraska and northwest Kansas, and the deployment covers the main hospital plus two additional rural clinics, Curtis Medical Center and Trenton Medical Clinic.
The implementation leverages hyperconverged infrastructure with native Nutanix integration, enabling Cohesity DataProtect to operate as a hyperconverged data management layer. The hospital is protecting more than 300 Citrix virtual machines, an on premises Exchange server, three EMR applications, and PACS image repositories stored on SAN, while also using the platform for test and development. Cohesity DataProtect was configured for backup and recovery, and the organization plans to expand into file and object services and distributed file capabilities.
The project included a proof of concept that validated seamless integration with Nutanix HCI, and Channel Partner Converge One supported the engagement. The IT team considered Commvault and Rubrik before selecting Cohesity DataProtect, citing ease of management and right sized hardware and software provisioning. Snapshots and Cohesity snapshot workflows are being used to enable nonproduction testing and disaster recovery rehearsals, reducing risk for application changes and staff training.
Governance and operations shifted to a unified HCI aware data management model, allowing any member of the IT staff to administer backups and restores with reduced training overhead. Explicit results reported by the hospital include a 40 percent reduction in data management costs, reduction of backup windows from more than seven hours to two hours, and an RTO improvement of six hours through more reliable restores.
