In 2012, Davies Collison Cave implemented Lexis Affinity as the firmwide Case Management,Legal Practice Management platform to support matter lifecycle and client administration across its Australian professional services practice. The project was a managed upgrade of the Lexis Affinity Practice Management software, positioned to centralize matter intake and practice workflows for fee earners and practice support teams.
The implementation configured core functional modules aligned with legal practice management workflows, including matter management, time recording, billing and client invoicing, trust and client ledger controls, document management, and conflict checking. Configuration work focused on firm billing codes, matter templates, security roles and access controls, and workflow automation for matter intake and billing approval paths.
The upgrade was delivered through a staged project lifecycle with environment provisioning, scripted data migration of matters and client records, system configuration, user acceptance testing and targeted end user training for practice groups and finance staff. Operational scope covered fee earners, practice managers and finance teams across the firm, with testing and training sequenced by practice area to reduce disruption to billable work.
Governance established application stewardship between IT and practice operations, formalized change control for configuration updates, and created a support and release cadence for subsequent Affinity patches and maintenance. Documentation, role-based training materials and acceptance criteria were retained as part of the operational handoff to ensure continuity of practice management processes.
