In 2015, Epilepsy Care Alliance implemented Microsoft Azure Machine Learning to power a wearable and mobile based seizure detection and alerting service. Epilepsy Care Alliance used Microsoft Azure Machine Learning, an ML and Data Science Platforms solution, to analyze sensor streams from the Microsoft Band and patient smartphone software for real time seizure detection and clinical notification to support clinical care.
The deployment combines on device sensing via the Microsoft Band, client software on the patient mobile phone, and cloud hosted machine learning models in Microsoft Azure Machine Learning, forming an edge to cloud workflow for continuous monitoring. Functional capabilities implemented include activity and event classification, real time alert generation, routing of notifications to next of kin, and secure transmission of event details to NHS clinical teams so individual care can be adjusted. The programme was developed in collaboration with Kent University and software specialists Graphnet and Shearwater, who contributed to algorithm development and systems integration.
The operational rollout targets coverage across Dorset with an initial aim to help around 2,000 patients, impacting clinical monitoring, care coordination and patient self management workflows. Governance and workflow adjustments route detected events into NHS clinical review so care plans are updated based on monitored data, enabling more proactive assessment. Patient feedback has been reported as very encouraging and the Alliance states that the combination of Microsoft Azure Machine Learning and the Microsoft Band is enabling patients to regain independence while their condition is being proactively monitored.
