In 2020, Folha de S.Paulo Brazil ingested and indexed a 100-year photographic archive into Google Archive Cloud Storage, implementing Archive as a Service (AaaS) to make 2.5 million images searchable and improve editorial productivity in Brazil. The implementation centralized century-old media into archive-class object storage intended for long-term preservation and regulatory compliance, using Google Archive Cloud Storage as the core repository.
The deployment combined large-scale image ingestion with search indexing and metadata enrichment workflows, provisioning an image processing pipeline that scaled to process up to 200,000 images per day after deployment. Functional capabilities implemented included durable object storage, indexed metadata catalogs for fast retrieval, and automated processing to prepare archival assets for newsroom search and editorial use.
The project was delivered in partnership with Assetway and the Google News Initiative, with Assetway acting as the implementation partner coordinating ingestion and indexing operations. Operational coverage focused on Grupo Folha editorial and archival teams across Brazil, centralizing access to historical photographs for reporting and content reuse.
Governance and rollout emphasized metadata standardization, access controls, and staged processing to ramp throughput while preserving original assets, and Google Archive Cloud Storage remained the persistent archive layer supporting searchability and editorial workflows. The deployment positioned the archive for sustained archive-class retention and newsroom integration under the Archive as a Service (AaaS) model.
