In 2019, Harpak-ULMA implemented Rockwell FactoryTalk InnovationSuite to institute Asset Performance Management capabilities across its smart packaging lines. The implementation was part of a broader multi-phase digital roadmap launched in October 2018 aimed at enabling smart, connected machines for Harpak-ULMA and its customers in the food, medical and industrial markets.
The deployment leveraged standardized Rockwell Automation control hardware and an open-architecture approach to embed telemetry and diagnostics, with Rockwell FactoryTalk InnovationSuite providing the Asset Performance Management application layer. Functional capabilities implemented include augmented reality workflows for visual training, remote expert collaboration and virtual factory acceptance tests, digital twin visualization for interactive fault diagnosis, and expanded IoT touchpoints to surface real-time operating data and onboard diagnostics to production staff.
Integrations documented in the case study include pre-integrated compatibility with PTC Vuforia and ThingWorx to support AR and IoT applications, and connectivity to AR headsets, smartphones and tablets for frontline access to machine models. Operational coverage targeted Harpak-ULMA engineered packaging machines and end-to-end packaging line automation deployed to customer sites, impacting production operators, maintenance technicians and customer support functions.
Rollout followed the defined four-phase roadmap with phase one establishing the control and connectivity foundation, phase two delivering AR workflows, phase three expanding embedded IoT and digital twin exposure, and phase four planning machine learning and cloud-based predictive maintenance services. The case study highlights explicit benefits such as reduced operator learning curves and faster onboarding, the ability to diagnose faults without immediate cabinet access, and noted risks around data ownership and connectivity that must be resolved before full predictive maintenance services are realized.
