In 2020, Hong Kong Shue Yan University deployed IBM Watson Studio (ex IBM Data Science Experience) as part of an on-premises IBM Cloud Pak for Data implementation. The ML and Data Science Platforms deployment underpinned the university's September 2020 launch of three laboratories, including a Big Data Laboratory designed to teach data analytics and support faculty research.
The implementation centered on graphical and microservice-based capabilities within IBM Watson Studio and Cloud Pak for Data, notably the AutoAI visual tool for automated model building and a Watson Discovery minimum viable product for news analysis. AutoAI was configured to handle data pre-processing, model selection and algorithm performance visualization with no coding required, enabling low-code and no-code workflows for students and faculty. The platform’s modular microservices approach allowed the university to select just the analytic components required for teaching, research and data visualization workloads.
IBM Client Engineering led a workshop-driven requirements process and delivered a two-week MVP of Watson Discovery that ingested university-selected news sources to validate natural language processing workflows. The Cloud Pak for Data stack and IBM Watson Studio run on the university’s private cloud and are used in the Big Data Laboratory, the Department of Applied Data Science, and courses in Business Administration and Economics and Finance. As of January 2022, about 100 students were using the IBM Cloud platform for coursework and research, and faculty have used the environment to introduce Python programming and fintech analytics through hands-on labs.
Rollout was governed through classroom and workshop formats, typically a three-hour demonstration followed by a two-hour lab, which simplified faculty onboarding and widened participation in training events. Faculty and students reported positive feedback on the ease of use and the platform’s ability to visualize data workflows, and workshop attendance rose from previous cohorts to nearly 50 attendees in a four-day remote workshop. The platform is planned to support the Bachelor of Science in Applied Data Science program launching in 2022 and future IoT-related coursework and research integrations.
