| IBM | Legacy | IBM Cloud Pak for Data | Data Warehouse | Analytics and BI | n/a | 2020 | 2020 | In September 2020, Hong Kong Shue Yan University launched three laboratories and deployed IBM Cloud Pak for Data as a Data Warehouse solution to support teaching and research. The deployment targeted a new Big Data Laboratory within the research building, and the initial operational scope emphasized instruction and faculty research across the Department of Applied Data Science, the Department of Business Administration, and the Department of Economics and Finance. The IBM Cloud Pak for Data platform was provisioned on the universitys on premises private cloud and configured to expose multiple microservices and analytic components for classroom use. Key functional capabilities implemented include IBM Watson Discovery for unstructured news analysis and AutoAI within IBM Watson Studio to automate data preprocessing, model selection, and visual model evaluation, enabling low or no code methods for nontechnical users. Integrations and proof of concept work were conducted through an IBM Client Engineering workshop that produced a two week minimum viable product of Watson Discovery using university selected data sources. The platform integration emphasizes a single user friendly interface that guides students and faculty through data ingestion, visualization, model building, and report generation, and the environment supports planned connections to IoT devices for future courses. Governance and rollout followed an academic centric approach, with workshop led onboarding for professors and staff, short lab based classes that combine demos with hands on practice, and staged adoption across departments. The implementation explicitly supports pedagogical aims, with professors using the platform to teach Python and data analysis workflows and the university planning to embed the platform into curriculum such as a Bachelor of Science in Applied Data Science program launching in 2022. As of January 2022, about 100 students are using IBM Cloud Pak for Data in the Big Data Laboratory, and university workshops expanded attendance from around 20 to nearly 50 staff members as adoption grew. The deployment positions Hong Kong Shue Yan University to scale data analytics and machine learning pedagogy across teaching and research while retaining on premises control of its Data Warehouse platform. |
