In 2019 LG UPLUS implemented TBCASoft, deploying a Blockchain Platform to enable mobile payments for subscribers traveling between Korea, Taiwan and Japan. The deployment was announced as part of the Cross Carrier Payment System created by SoftBank and partners, and LG UPLUS signed a memorandum of understanding with Far EasTone and SoftBank while TBCASoft provided the underlying blockchain platform.
The implementation centers on a single shared ledger model that consolidates payment authorization and settlement capabilities, enabling transactions to flow through a subscriber mobile account rather than a traditional credit card rails. TBCASoft, the application name, is used to instrument shared ledger settlement, reduce inter carrier reconciliation, and support authorization and clearing workflows typical of blockchain based payment ecosystems.
Operational integrations explicitly include carrier billing linkage that posts charges to mobile accounts, partner carrier interoperability with Far EasTone and SoftBank, and acceptance at selected retail merchants in the target countries. The scope covers LG UPLUS customers roaming in Taiwan and Japan and reciprocal support for Taiwanese Far EasTone subscribers visiting Korea and Japan, impacting mobile payments, billing, merchant acceptance and carrier settlement functions.
Governance and consortium level coordination was formalized via the memorandum of understanding and participation in the CBSG consortium, creating a single shared ledger governance model that eliminates reconciliation issues between telecom companies. Outcomes stated by the parties include customers avoiding overseas credit card transaction fees, reduced foreign exchange risks, and a streamlined carrier settlement process because payments are routed through mobile accounts on the blockchain platform.
