In 2019, Louis Dreyfus deployed Covantis Blockchain as a Blockchain Platform to digitize and streamline post trade operations for bulk agricultural commodities. Covantis Blockchain was introduced through a consortium initiative led by Archer Daniels Midland, Bunge, Cargill and Louis Dreyfus, with COFCO and Glencore joining later, and targets grain and oilseeds trade corridors including a pilot for soybean bulk transport from Brazil to China.
The implementation focuses on contract execution automation, document orchestration and transaction processing across the trade execution lifecycle, extending from contract management through vessel finalization. Covantis Blockchain is designed to incorporate blockchain and allied technologies including AI to automate routine execution tasks and reduce manual documentation workflows, with stated targets to automate 60 percent of execution tasks and to reduce data re keying by 90 percent.
Architecturally, the Covantis platform was built on Quorum, the enterprise blockchain variant of Ethereum, while the design remains blockchain agnostic to allow evolution of the underlying ledger technology. The platform architecture emphasizes security, privacy and uptime requirements, and combines distributed ledger components with automation and AI capabilities to support multilateral industry workflows across trading firms, carriers and post trade operations.
Governance and rollout were staged through the consortium model, with Geneva based Stefano Rettore appointed as interim head pending a formal governance structure and CEO appointment. The group planned formal incorporation in the second half of 2020 and targeted a market launch in 2020, positioning Covantis Blockchain to accelerate documentation by seven to ten days and to increase transaction speeds by up to 70 percent while aiming to cut error rates by 80 percent.
