In 2025 Nagoya University tested Trimble RTX for Geology and Seismic Data Processing to support seafloor crustal-deformation monitoring in Japan. The Earthquake and Volcano Research Center EVRC validated real-time positioning workflows using shipboard GNSS hardware combined with Trimble CenterPoint RTX corrections to target centimeter-level accuracy.
The implementation centered on real-time GNSS correction ingestion and high-precision positioning capabilities native to Trimble RTX, with configuration tuned for shipboard deployment. Shipboard GNSS receivers were instrumented to accept continuous CenterPoint RTX correction streams, enabling persistent kinematic positioning and rapid displacement detection consistent with seismic monitoring workflows.
Integrations included Trimble GNSS reference equipment and the CenterPoint RTX correction service, consolidated into onboard processing pipelines for seafloor monitoring. Operational coverage focused on seafloor crustal-deformation monitoring in Japanese waters, aligning GNSS positioning outputs with oceanographic measurement routines and monitoring schedules.
Project governance was organized around EVRC testing cycles and operational procedure changes for shipboard instrumentation and real-time data handling, shifting monitoring workflows toward continuous correction feeds and near real-time position publishing. The program emphasized operational readiness for rapid detection rather than long batch processing.
The deployment achieved 2 to 3 centimeter real-time positioning accuracy, which improved real-time seafloor displacement detection and supports faster tsunami and earthquake warning capabilities.
