In 2018, National Geographic Society implemented Workday Financial Management as its ERP Financial solution, replacing Oracle PeopleSoft ERP. The deployment centralized core finance functions for magazine circulation and business operations across the United States, supporting National Geographic Magazine and National Geographic History Magazine and encompassing circulation modeling, vendor fulfillment, inventory control, and purchase order processing.
Workday Financial Management was configured to support general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, purchasing, budgeting and forecasting, and management reporting, enabling maintenance of the Domestic National Geographic Magazine income statement and working P+Ls. The implementation supported quarterly forecasts, annual budgets, scenario analysis workflows for marketing and acquisition decisions, and the creation of monthly product purchase orders for production and fulfillment.
The deployment included data continuity and migration activity from Oracle PeopleSoft ERP and operational reconciliation with E1 where relevant, reflecting the Planner role s proficiency across Workday, E1 and PeopleSoft. Functional interfaces and reconciliation processes were established to ensure accounts receivable coordination with third party vendors and to synchronize inventory and fulfillment instructions with external fulfillment partners.
Governance and workflow changes placed the Manager, Planning Circulation & Business Operations, known as Planner, as primary owner for the circulation model, P&L variance explanations, quarterly forecast and annual budget cycles, and cross functional scenario analyses with Consumer Marketing Directors. Operational controls were adjusted to coordinate procurement through Workday purchase orders, enforce inventory accuracy controls, and provide standardized financial support and AR communication processes for Marketing and Acquisition teams.

In 2009 National Geographic Society implemented Oracle PeopleSoft HCM as a Core HR platform and provisioned demo, development, test and production environments using Oracle databases. The Oracle PeopleSoft HCM deployment supported core HR, Payroll, Benefits, Time & Labor, Compensation, Recruiting and Performance business functions across the organization.
Implementation work encompassed nine major application installations and upgrades and sixteen major PeopleTools installations and upgrades, supplemented by numerous application maintenance packs, bundles, tax updates and PeopleTools patches. The team designed and implemented infrastructure to provide external internet access to Enterprise Portal and the HRMS recruiting module, and deployed a custom licensing application in Portal alongside an app engine to populate Portal tables with organizational and employee data from HRMS.
Integrations and operational coverage included synchronization of Portal with HRMS and Financials, configured PeopleSoft bolt on software for file transmissions to and from external organizations, and migration of custom changes through test and production environments. The program also analyzed and reapplied custom modifications during upgrades and performed custom development to assist analysts and developers with design, testing and debugging of modifications.
Governance and process controls focused on security and operational automation, with defined and maintained security setup in PeopleSoft and Oracle, scripts for automatically granting and revoking security access, and Time and Labor manager and timekeeper security setup including custom functionality for assigning timekeepers to departments. Ongoing infrastructure responsibilities included Oracle database administration, installing and upgrading web, application and batch server software, monitoring server performance and space utilization, designing file server permissions and coordinating OS and hardware upgrade validation with server administrators.
Operational support tasks delivered primary technical support for core HR modules, troubleshooting and resolution of production problems using SQL analysis, configuration and maintenance of bolt on file transmission tools, and continued infrastructure documentation and vendor collaboration for issue resolution. The engagement emphasized continual maintenance, patching and environment management across all PeopleSoft environments rather than a temporary or limited support window.
