In 2023, Nucor Steel Gallatin implemented SMS X-Pact MES as part of an incremental brownfield upgrade to its Gallatin steel plant in Ghent, Kentucky. The deployment followed a staged commissioning approach that included parallel shadow mode testing, a go live window completed within sixteen hours, and subsequent inclusion of new production lines comprising a melt shop, a caster, a hot strip mill extension, and a pickling and galvanizing line.
The implementation configured modular functional components of SMS X-Pact MES including the Technical Order Generator, Capacity Planner, Production Sequencer, Short Term Scheduling, Quality Manager, and Production Controller, together with a Business Intelligence Manager for analysis and reporting. SMS X-Pact MES was implemented to deliver advanced data driven production planning and quality management workflows, and it was integrated with SMS digital’s Quality Execution System for product quality monitoring, evaluation, and dispatch certification.
Integration work included a concurrent redesign and implementation of the interface between SMS X-Pact MES and Nucor’s ERP system, and the MES was designed to support integration of all required third party interfaces to map the end to end production process. Operational responsibility and governance were clarified so planning responsibilities are divided between the ERP system and the MES, enabling improved planning options and short term order rescheduling, with execution and quality functions instrumented at the plant level across production and IT teams.
The project governance emphasized close collaboration between Nucor IT, SMS, and other parties, and remote commissioning techniques were used to manage constraints from the global pandemic and the plant shutdown schedule. The SMS X-Pact MES implementation, categorized as Manufacturing ERP, is described by project stakeholders as improving transparency for production planning, reducing product rejects, and improving product quality while providing enhanced reporting for productivity and key performance indicator evaluation.
