In 2013, Rainforest Trust implemented Core Accounting, an ERP Financial application, to centralize accounting, budgeting and reporting for the nonprofit. The implementation supported a conservation organization that expanded programmatically to over 150 conservation projects in more than 40 countries and whose annual budget exceeded 20 million in 2019.
Core Accounting was configured to deliver core general ledger, fund accounting, budget management, accounts payable and accounts receivable capabilities, along with financial reporting and audit support. Payroll and human resources administrative workflows were tied to the accounting environment through the selection and implementation of a PEO system by Rainforest Trust. The deployment emphasized transaction transparency and structured financial reporting to support board level reporting and statutory audits.
The system was operated primarily by finance and administrative teams including the director of finance, comptroller and chief financial officer, and it centralized fiscal controls and month end close workflows. Core Accounting supported budgeting and forecasting processes used in strategic planning as the organization scaled staff from 3 to 42 employees. Operational coverage extended to administrative functions such as personnel management, office relocations and facilities oversight.
Governance changes included instituting annual employee review processes, formalizing audit ownership led by the CFO and integrating financial reporting into board governance routines. Core Accounting enabled consistent administration of accounting, budgeting, reporting and human resources systems that underpinned Rainforest Trusts growth from approximately 2.5 million in annual revenue to over 40 million per annum, and supported expansion of conservation project scope and staffing.
