In 2016 Raspberry Pi Foundation integrated RealVNC Connect into the Raspbian and Raspberry Pi OS distribution to provide built in remote access for educational and maker use. The deployment addressed classroom and maker workflows across the United Kingdom and the global Raspberry Pi community, aligning device access with Remote Monitoring and Management practices. This inclusion targeted device level access for students and hobbyists to reduce friction in remote development and instruction.
RealVNC Server, marketed as RealVNC Connect, was bundled in the OS image and configured to start with the desktop session, enabling remote desktop access and secure remote support capabilities common to Remote Monitoring and Management solutions. The implementation emphasized out of the box availability, simplified enablement controls, and integration with the Raspberry Pi OS session and network stack to minimize manual configuration for end users. Inclusion at the distribution level meant the application was present on newly imaged devices and in default downloads.
RealVNC partnered with Raspberry Pi Foundation on the distribution level inclusion to streamline rollout and reduce setup time and support overhead for education and maker support functions. Operational scope included education departments, teacher and student workflows, and global maker communities using Raspberry Pi hardware, with governance centered on distribution packaging and user enablement documentation. The project focused on device level provisioning, and outcomes explicitly included reduced setup time and lower support overhead.
