In 2017 Schlichter, Shonack & Keeton implemented CARET AbacusLaw for Legal Practice Management to centralize core financial and matter billing workflows. The deployment targeted a small professional services firm architecture supporting accounting and billing operations at the firm level, with the CARET AbacusLaw application serving as the central practice management system.
Configuration emphasized billing and accounting modules, including general and trust bank account controls, accounts receivable, accounts payable, electronic billing rules, and billing cycle orchestration. CARET AbacusLaw was configured to support monthly billing cycles and time entry validation workflows, and to handle exceptions where insurer rules excluded certain attorney or paralegal time entries.
The implementation operated alongside the firm s existing financial and HR tooling used by staff, including QuickBooks and ADP, with users relying on Microsoft Outlook, Excel and Word for adjunct administrative workflows. Operational coverage included the billing and accounting team, paralegals, attorneys and partners based in the El Segundo office, with CARET AbacusLaw acting as the authoritative system for matter billing and trust accounting records.
Governance and process changes formalized reconciliation of client payments, customer payouts and attorney bonus distributions through the CARET AbacusLaw workflow, and reinforced controls over trust account deposits. Routine exceptions were escalated when insurer payment policies denied specific time entries, preserving collaboration between billing staff, paralegals and attorneys to resolve billing disputes.
