In 2017, SemCAMS implemented Quorum Aucerna Execute as an EPM application to strengthen Authorization for Expenditure AFE controls within its midstream operations. The deployment focused on operations and finance teams at SemCAMS Canadian sites, aiming to standardize AFE creation, approvals, and status visibility across the organization.
Quorum Aucerna Execute was configured to enforce approval sequencing, provide an auditable AFE status trail, and reduce manual data entry by centralizing workflow orchestration and document handling. Governance changes included formalized AFE routing and reviewer visibility, which SemCAMS reported led to fewer errors caused by manual use and improved ease of use. The organization cited increased peace of mind from being able to trace where an AFE is at as a key operational outcome following the Quorum Aucerna Execute implementation.

In 2019 SemCAMS deployed ABB Ability System 800xA at its Wapiti gas plant in Alberta to support midstream gas processing and plant operations. The project was delivered through system integrator Blackrock Automation Canada and targeted a process automation and operations deployment using ABB Ability System 800xA with the Select I/O platform.
ABB Ability System 800xA was configured as a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) solution to provide centralized control, operator visualization, and orchestrated process automation across the facility. The implementation leveraged the Select I/O platform for modular field I/O and commissioning workflows, aligning control strategies with physical instrumentation and HMI configuration.
Integration efforts concentrated on commissioning and system integration tasks, where System 800xA and Select I/O were used to bring plant I/O and field instrumentation into the control architecture. Operational coverage explicitly included midstream gas processing and plant operations at the Wapiti site, with configuration work focused on steady state control, alarm management, and operator workflows.
Project governance and rollout were managed through Blackrock Automation Canada, with staged commissioning and integration testing to enable rapid operational handover. The case study reports that the use of ABB Ability System 800xA and Select I/O enabled the facility to begin production two months ahead of schedule.
