In 2010, Severson & Werson implemented LexisNexis PCLaw to centralize Legal Practice Management across administrative, secretarial and litigation support workflows. The deployment targeted firm operations in the San Francisco office of a 150 employee professional services firm, aligning the application with secretarial, litigation support and billing staff responsibilities.
LexisNexis PCLaw was configured to support core Legal Practice Management capabilities including matter and client intake, conflict checking, timekeeping and billing file creation, calendaring for depositions and hearings, and document assembly and filing workflows. Administrative configuration included user provisioning and role assignment, with an internal administrator responsible for adding, deleting and managing user accounts and permissions within the firm.
Operational use emphasized litigation support tasks such as preparing and filing civil litigation and discovery documents with district courts, transcribing dictation into correspondence and legal documents, and routing, date stamping and docketing incoming pleadings. The system was used to produce engagement letters, new business memoranda and requests for new client firm and billing files, and to capture associate time via timesheets for subsequent billing processes.
Governance centered on a designated LexisNexis PCLaw administrator and standardized workflows to support floating secretary coverage and electronic filing clerk duties. Processes were structured to route calendar events, conflict checks and billing file creation through LexisNexis PCLaw to enforce consistent handling of client intake, document filing and time capture.
