In 2011, the Special Court for Sierra Leone deployed ZyLAB Legal Discovery Platform to process and search millions of documents as part of the prosecution of Charles Taylor. This engagement is recorded under the Legal Practice Management category and was centered on criminal litigation workflows in the West Africa region, supporting prosecutorial discovery and records management ahead of the 2012 conviction. The implementation explicitly supported legal and investigative teams within the court and regional prosecution functions.
The ZyLAB Legal Discovery Platform implementation focused on large scale evidence ingestion, automated text mining, and review capabilities. The deployment created a centralized indexed repository to enable full text search, pattern detection and concept search across millions of records, and it incorporated review workflows for tagging and redaction to support legal analysis. Text mining and link analysis were used to surface coded references and connections within the document corpus that were not visible through manual review alone.
Governance and operational practices were aligned to prosecutorial review and records management needs, with formalized review queues and document handling processes to support evidentiary use. The implementation enabled identification of coded references and links that were crucial to the case, directly supporting litigation analysis and investigative linkage. The workstream remained focused on evidence intake, search and review capabilities provided by ZyLAB Legal Discovery Platform and on operationalizing those capabilities for the court's legal and records teams.
