Sterling Talent Solutions Legacy Sterling Background Check BackGround Screening HCM n/a 2020 2020
In 2020, Special Olympics Southern California implemented Sterling Background Check, a BackGround Screening application from Sterling Talent Solutions to restore integrated volunteer screening capabilities and control costs. The move followed an abrupt price increase and the loss of integration by the prior screening provider, which had created significant manual workload and budget pressure for the organization. The deployment re-established direct integration between Sterling Background Check and the organization’s volunteer database, removing the need for double database entry that had fallen to the Manager of Volunteer Systems. Configuration centered on comprehensive criminal record search capabilities rather than one size fits all national database queries, and the implementation included a volunteer self pay option for background checks. Operational coverage included nine regional offices and a volunteer network of more than 15,000, and the program processed 1,200 background checks using Sterling Background Check. The solution’s inclusion of county level pulls, notably Los Angeles County criminal records, enabled volunteer managers to make more informed decisions about volunteer applications. Governance and workflow changes focused on restoring an end to end screening workflow from the volunteer system into Sterling Background Check, reducing manual operational friction for volunteer management. Case study outcomes reported more cost effective and more comprehensive background checks, and volunteers paid more than 20 percent of screening costs, allowing Special Olympics Southern California to preserve budget for programming.

Zoom Video Communications Legacy Zoom Audio Video and Web Conferencing Collaboration n/a 2020 2020
In 2020 Special Olympics deployed Zoom from Zoom Video Communications as its Audio Video and Web Conferencing solution. The implementation is visible on SpecialOlympics.org where Zoom meeting and webinar sessions are embedded into public event and engagement pages, providing direct join flows for participants and remote stakeholders. The implementation focuses on Zoom's core audio and video conferencing and webinar capabilities, with browser based join experiences and scheduled meeting orchestration exposed on the website. Zoom is used to publish meeting links and embedded clients on event pages, while scheduled events and host assignments are managed through centralized Zoom accounts aligned to program and communications teams. Integration architecture centers on embedding Zoom meeting clients and surfacing meeting metadata on event and registration pages to simplify external access, supporting events, communications, training, and volunteer coordination functions across the organization. The deployment emphasizes public facing meeting and webinar workflows rather than internal only collaboration use cases. Governance and operational process changes standardize meeting provisioning, host role definitions, and consistent meeting configuration to control public event security and accessibility. Controls are applied at the account and event page level to maintain consistent virtual event workflows across Special Olympics.
