In 2017 SunCoke Energy, Inc. implemented IBM Maximo for Enterprise Asset Management to centralize incident investigations and asset histories across its cokemaking plants and coal logistics terminals. The deployment leveraged IBM Maximo for Oil and Gas functionality to operationalize a structured root cause failure analysis model within investigation workflows and asset records.
Configuration included the Maximo investigation application, Pre RFCA templates, checklists and action item workflows, plus guidance for 5 Why analysis to drive deeper fault isolation. Work order integration and permanent audit records ensured investigation outputs, corrective actions and assigned tasks became immutable parts of the asset record and traceable over time.
The implementation covered SunCoke’s cokemaking facilities and coal logistics terminals in Illinois, Indiana, Virginia, Ohio, Brazil and India, and extended visibility to the corporate office and maintenance and reliability teams. Maximo brought together incidents, defects, work orders and investigation artifacts onto a single platform to support visibility across sites and monitoring of event impacts and losses.
Governance and process changes included escalation and notification workflows to drive corrective actions, formalized meeting preparation through Pre RFCA templates, and reassignment mechanisms to retain institutional knowledge when staff transition. As stated in the implementation record, SunCoke has documented over a thousand actions in Maximo and completed 820 root cause failure analyses since implementation, which has contributed to improved asset reliability and investigative rigor.
