In 2018, Sunrise Produce deployed Samsara Vehicle Telematics as its Fleet Management solution across a 44 vehicle fleet serving Southern California, bringing fleet visibility to its 150 employee wholesale distribution operation. The rollout was rapid and described as plug and play, with hardware and the Samsara dashboard operational within weeks, enabling IT and fleet operations to move away from manual spreadsheets for route and fuel tracking.
Deployment centered on vehicle telematics, real-time GPS and trip history, Time on Site reporting, and environmental monitoring for temperature and humidity. Samsara Vehicle Telematics captured second by second temperature logs with Environmental Monitors, automated route and stop counting, and provided a centralized dashboard for historical trip data, enabling data driven route planning and stop-level analysis.
Operational coverage included drivers, dispatch and back office fleet operations, and IT, with business functions impacted spanning route planning, driver productivity, and product quality. Using historical route data and Time on Site reporting in the Samsara dashboard, Sunrise Produce reduced average route time by 47 minutes, reported $50,000 saved in fuel through real time fleet visibility, reported $200,000 saved on driver overtime, and cited total savings of about $250,000.
Governance and process changes formalized use of Time on Site reports to coach drivers, detect unauthorized stops, and adjust stop counts to improve per truck profitability. Temperature records maintained in the Samsara dashboard are used for FSMA compliance audits, and ongoing vendor product updates and support were cited as enabling continued operational refinement.
