In 2017 Technical Safety BC implemented Emburse Enterprise as its Expense Management solution. The deployment centralized expense reporting, automated approval routing, and policy enforcement to standardize finance and travel expense workflows across the organization, with configuration focused on expense categories, approval hierarchies, and reimbursement workflows consistent with Expense Management functional patterns. Emburse Enterprise is referenced by name throughout internal training and rollout materials to ensure clarity between the application and expense policy controls.
The learning and development team designed, developed, delivered, and evaluated high-quality interactive training programs for over 400 employees to support the expense system rollout. The team revamped New Employee Orientation and reported 95% positive feedback from participants, launched Road to Mental Readiness training developed by the Mental Health Commission of Canada impacting 96% of the organization, and created micro-learning videos specifically for the launch of the new expense system Chrome River. Learning content and adoption tracking were administered in the SimplyDigi Learning Management System, including tracking attendance, managing classes, uploading eLearning content, and generating reports to measure completion and training coverage during the Emburse Enterprise implementation.

In 2017, Technical Safety BC implemented Dataiku Data Science Studio as a strategic ML and analytics platform to improve hazard prediction and reduce false positive inspections across British Columbia. The deployment of Dataiku Data Science Studio was driven by an objective to find more high-hazard sites while operating at the same resourcing level, and it was adopted by a newly created data analytics and decision science department responsible for integrating advanced analytics into core safety workflows.
Using Dataiku Data Science Studio the team established rapid prototyping and experiment management workflows to quickly prototype, test, iterate on, and deploy predictive models. Core functional capabilities implemented included data preparation and cleaning across heterogeneous sources, model training and scoring pipelines, model reuse and templating to avoid duplicate query work, and A/B testing to validate new risk models against operational baselines.
Operational coverage focused on risk assessment and inspection scheduling for safety officers across the province, with an initial emphasis on electrical technology risk signals. The platform handled uncoordinated heterogeneous data sources and data quality challenges within the analytics pipeline, and the predictive model was instrumented to adapt to emerging risks and automatically shift resource allocations based on updated predictions.
Governance and process changes included centralizing analytics ownership in a dedicated decision science team, building a culture of experimentation and rapid prototyping, and addressing training needs for machine-recommended predictions. Since deployment the model developed with Dataiku improved predictive performance by 85 percent for electrical technology, reduced the total number of mandatory inspections, enabled a small team of data scientists to accomplish more for safety outcomes, and delivered shorter deployment time and better scalability for future analytics work.
