In 2015, WR Berkley implemented Microsoft BI (SSRS, SSAS, SSIS, SQL Server Reporting) in an Analytics and BI engagement to support a highly complex data acquisition project in the Lloyds Insurance Market. The work focused on designing and delivering an end to end ETL, data warehouse and reporting solution targeted at Actuarial and Technical Provisions business areas.
The implementation used the full Microsoft BI stack with SSIS to design complex ETL pipelines and SQL Server 2012 as the primary development and database platform. Data modeling followed Kimball data warehouse principles, and SSAS cube development was executed with MDX calculations to support multidimensional actuarial analysis. Reconciliation logic was implemented across staging, integration, and presentation layers to preserve data lineage and validation.
Reporting was delivered through SQL Server Reporting Services with SSRS reports consuming both SSAS cubes and the dimensional data warehouse for operational and analytical use cases. The program replaced existing development, test, and production environments with a new infrastructure and introduced formal engineering practices, including source control, test driven development, and continuous integration and deployment pipelines, operating within an agile methodology.
Operational scope covered Actuarial and Technical Provisions teams engaged in the Lloyds Market project, and the deployment emphasized core Analytics and BI capabilities such as ETL orchestration, dimensional modeling, cube design, MDX calculation authoring, and report delivery. Governance activities centered on formalizing source control and release processes, instituting test automation, and establishing CI CD workflows to govern ongoing development and maintenance.
