Greater Manchester Police | Government | 11700 | $1.1B | United Kingdom | Hewlett Packard Enterprise | HPE NonStop (formerly Tandem) | Servers, Storage and Networking | 2004 |
In 2004, Greater Manchester Police implemented HPE NonStop formerly Tandem as its primary Servers, Storage and Networking platform to support command and control operations. The deployment was sized to support the Greater Manchester Police Computer System GMPICS which processes roughly 3,700 incidents and 1,200 crimes per day, and to provide continuous access for operational staff across a geographically diverse 500 square mile area, supporting operational officers and Police National Computer duties and resources.
The implementation used HPE NonStop S-series hardware, delivered as a six processor S74006 production system and an S740 development system supplied by Hewlett Packard Enterprise, with Brightstrand International engaged to plan, deploy, and manage the rollout. The configuration increased client session capacity to accommodate up to 5,000 workstations distributed across more than 100 locations, and the systems went live in under four months, aligning platform provisioning with the force’s defined technical architecture.
Software components deployed alongside HPE NonStop formerly Tandem included hp Remote Database Facility RDF and the NonStop AutoTMF and NonStop AutoSYNC products from Carr Scott Software, providing synchronous replication and transaction management capabilities. These business continuity and database resilience components were implemented to enable a fully operational live application to be available within one hour should the primary server become unavailable, and to support large Operational Information System and Vehicle Information System databases holding hundreds of thousands of records.
Governance and operational scope centered on using HPE NonStop as the preferred server platform for new applications, enforcing a technical architecture standard for future systems and web enablement. Documented results from the deployment include sustained availability and reliability of the GMP command and control system, removal of client session limitations for GMPICS, and reported reductions in hardware and software costs that contributed to total cost of ownership considerations.
