In 2015, 99 Cents Only Stores deployed Sierra Wireless AirLink Gateway devices, using the AirLink ES450 dual cellular gateways, as Secure Web Gateways (SWG) to secure POS and back office transaction traffic across its U.S. store footprint. Sierra Wireless AirLink Gateway was implemented to provide managed WAN connectivity and continuity for retail point of sale and transaction processing.
The implementation emphasized secure remote management and out of band access capabilities, with the gateways configured to provide cellular primary and failover connectivity and to segregate POS traffic for protection and control. Functional capabilities inferred from the deployment include centralized configuration and remote troubleshooting, secure tunneling for transaction traffic, and automated failover between cellular paths to maintain uninterrupted payment acceptance.
Sierra Wireless, Inc provided the AirLink gateway solution and the rollout was executed in coordination with MSP Accel Networks, integrating the gateways into store network edge architectures and POS network segments. Operational scope covered U.S. retail sites and business functions focused on POS operations, payments continuity, and back office transaction flows.
Governance and operational control were structured around centralized device management and MSP monitoring, enabling remote diagnostics and policy enforcement without in store physical intervention. The stated outcomes of the deployment were reduced downtime, lower connectivity costs, and protection of transaction revenue through resilient POS connectivity.
