In 2019 Abiomed initiated an SAP S/4 HANA 2019 implementation to replace SAP ERP ECC 6.0 and modernize its enterprise finance and operational backbone. The greenfield program kicked off in June 2019 and went live on November 2, 2020 after an extended preparation phase focused on readiness, data remediation, and business process redesign.
The deployment concentrated on core ERP Financial capabilities and enterprise process standardization across roughly ten business areas. The main implementation team included 40 internal contributors with 16 business process leads, supported by 10 functional consultants, a testing lead, a data migration lead, two project managers, and about 30 external consultants providing hosting, basis, and security services, with more than 150 additional stakeholders engaged across downstream and upstream lines.
Data migration and validation were central technical workstreams, driven by a need to cleanse and restructure 15 years of accumulated transactional data before cutover. A sandbox populated with Abiomed data was used during the prep phase, complemented by SAP S/4HANA Readiness Check and SAP Business Scenario Recommendation assessments to evaluate transition scenarios and validate future state configuration. The technical footprint included hosted infrastructure and basis services to support sandboxing, testing, and production provisioning.
Governance emphasized decentralized ownership by business process leads rather than a centralized change management office, which required each department to manage training and end-user readiness and resulted in observable gaps at go-live. During Realize two additional modules were approved which added scope and testing requirements, and COVID-19 created coordination complexity during FY2020 that the program absorbed through extended preparation and cross-functional validation. The implementation narrative centers on a greenfield SAP S/4 HANA approach, enterprise data remediation, cross-area process redesign, and decentralized change governance across Abiomed.

In 2016 Abiomed implemented SAP SuccessFactors Compensation as part of a broader global SAP SuccessFactors program, establishing Compensation Management capability within HR and linking compensation planning to talent processes. The deployment was led from a technology leadership perspective covering HR and Service Management Tools across IT, Facilities, Finance, Communications, and Legal, with responsibility for strategy development, cost management, proposal development, end user training delivery and communications.
SAP SuccessFactors Compensation was configured alongside Employee Central, Recruiting, Onboarding, Career Development and Succession, Goals and Performance to create an integrated human capital management fabric. Configuration work focused on compensation planning workflows, merit and variable pay processes, approval routing, calibration support and role based access, using standard SuccessFactors compensation planning and performance alignment constructs.
Integrations included bi-directional data flows with SAP SuccessFactors Employee Central and the Performance and Goals modules to ensure headcount, job, and rating data informed compensation cycles, and the program lead also drove a ServiceNow transition from Express to Enterprise to centralize HR, finance and onboarding service management. Finance collaboration included monthly invoice reconciliations and vendor management for concurrent implementations, ensuring procurement and cost controls stayed aligned with the compensation program cadence.
Governance was formalized through a steering committee model and structured stakeholder communications to review issues, risks, change control and action items, and the program management approach resolved competing demands across scope, schedule, cost and quality while managing risk. Training, rollout communications and service management SLA design were delivered as part of the implementation to operationalize SAP SuccessFactors Compensation and embed Compensation Management processes into HR and adjacent business functions.

The ECI Macola application was configured to provide core manufacturing and distribution control, emphasizing master data governance for part numbers, Bill of Materials, and routing to support production and materials planning.
Configuration emphasized master data management, work order and routing maintenance, and transactional inventory controls consistent with Manufacturing ERP,Distribution ERP functionality. The implementation was positioned to support configuration management and document control use cases, enabling Document Control and Configuration Management teams to manage change control workflows and maintain quality system records within ERP-driven processes.
Operational rollout was coordinated to align ERP master data and change control processes with concurrent SAP S4/Hana initiatives and the companys SuccessFactors EMS activities, while covering Quality Systems Training responsibilities for Danvers MA, Aachen DE, and Japan. The deployment scope included administration of the Change Control Board, follow up on CCB tasks, and management of access and approval issues that intersected with SAP and S4 environments.
Governance focused on embedding change control and configuration management into daily operations, with Document Control leads responsible for yearly goal creation, periodic follow up, and input to the enterprise EMS. The implementation narrative centers on ECI Macola as the Manufacturing ERP,Distribution ERP platform supporting configuration management, document control, and quality-aligned master data governance at Abiomed.
