The main implementation team included 40 internal contributors with 16 business process leads, supported by 10 functional consultants, a testing lead, a data migration lead, two project managers, and about 30 external consultants providing hosting, basis, and security services, with more than 150 additional stakeholders engaged across downstream and upstream lines. Data migration and validation were central technical workstreams, driven by a need to cleanse and restructure 15 years of accumulated transactional data before cutover. A sandbox populated with Abiomed data was used during the prep phase, complemented by SAP S/4HANA Readiness Check and SAP Business Scenario Recommendation assessments to evaluate transition scenarios and validate future state configuration. The technical footprint included hosted infrastructure and basis services to support sandboxing, testing, and production provisioning. Governance emphasized decentralized ownership by business process leads rather than a centralized change management office, which required each department to manage training and end-user readiness and resulted in observable gaps at go-live. During Realize two additional modules were approved which added scope and testing requirements, and COVID-19 created coordination complexity during FY2020 that the program absorbed through extended preparation and cross-functional validation. The implementation narrative centers on a greenfield SAP S/4 HANA approach, enterprise data remediation, cross-area process redesign, and decentralized change governance across Abiomed.

Integrations included bi-directional data flows with SAP SuccessFactors Employee Central and the Performance and Goals modules to ensure headcount, job, and rating data informed compensation cycles, and the program lead also drove a ServiceNow transition from Express to Enterprise to centralize HR, finance and onboarding service management. Finance collaboration included monthly invoice reconciliations and vendor management for concurrent implementations, ensuring procurement and cost controls stayed aligned with the compensation program cadence. Governance was formalized through a steering committee model and structured stakeholder communications to review issues, risks, change control and action items, and the program management approach resolved competing demands across scope, schedule, cost and quality while managing risk. Training, rollout communications and service management SLA design were delivered as part of the implementation to operationalize SAP SuccessFactors Compensation and embed Compensation Management processes into HR and adjacent business functions.

The implementation narrative centers on ECI Macola as the Manufacturing ERP,Distribution ERP platform supporting configuration management, document control, and quality-aligned master data governance at Abiomed.
