In 2013, AIG Retirement Services implemented Symmetry Tax Engine in the Payroll Tax Compliance category to support tax calculation capabilities used by advisors within the 4Sight suite. The Symmetry Tax Engine integration was scoped as a payroll tax calculation and Paycheck calculator proof of concept, aligning the application with advisor-facing financial planning workflows in VALIC.
4Sight is a desktop application originally developed in VB6 and includes financial planning tools and calculators such as Paycheck and MAC, several of which were candidates for tax logic augmentation. Symmetry Tax Engine was used to inject canonical payroll tax calculation logic into the Paycheck calculator POC, enabling separation of tax rules from the desktop UI and centralizing tax computation in a reusable component.
The implementation was exercised inside a heterogeneous application architecture where 4Sight called external components built on Microsoft .NET 4.5, WPF, and WCF, and where backend persistence spanned MS Access, SQLExpress 2012, and Oracle 11g. Symmetry Tax Engine was integrated at the application service layer to interoperate with .NET/WPF front ends and server side services, and to consume or produce data persisted to the existing MS Access, SQLExpress, and Oracle stores.
Operational and delivery activities included user interface redesign to accommodate new tax outputs, code enhancements, stored procedure changes, development of WPF support tools, and production support. Teams executed unit testing and system integration testing, participated in change management and release activities, and performed platform migrations of client software from Windows XP to Windows 7 and later to Windows 8.1 while adapting desktop functionality for Microsoft SurfacePro3 e-Signature use cases.
