In 2015, American Express Global Business Travel implemented Coupa Invoice as part of a broader Coupa deployment targeting AP Automation and enterprise spend visibility. The rollout encompassed Coupa’s procurement, invoicing, expenses, and sourcing applications to create a unified cloud-based spend and travel expense management platform across the organization.
The implementation configured Coupa Invoice to enable electronic invoicing and touchless invoice processing, while Coupa’s procurement module provided a single employee-facing requisition channel to drive policy compliance and faster adoption. Coupa Expenses was deployed with mobile-enabled reporting and approval workflows to streamline travel and employee expense submission, and Coupa Sourcing introduced collaborative bidding and market-price discovery capabilities.
Coupa was integrated into Oracle Financials and NetSuite as part of GBT’s cloud-based business productivity solution, providing system-to-system flows for supplier onboarding, invoice posting, and financial reconciliation. The architecture centralized invoice and expense data in Coupa, while pushing validated AP transactions and general ledger mappings into Oracle Financials and NetSuite to preserve financial accounting continuity.
Governance changes emphasized centralized spend visibility and process controls, with procurement policies and expense approval workflows enforced through the Coupa suite. Reported outcomes included improved visibility into overall spend, better management of travel expenses, increased e-invoicing adoption and AP efficiency, and enhanced ability to manage cash and working capital through automated invoice processing.

| Sterling Talent Solutions | Legacy | Sterling Background Check | BackGround Screening | HCM | n/a | 2015 | 2015 |
In 2015 American Express Global Business Travel implemented Sterling Background Check as its BackGround Screening application to standardize candidate screening across global talent processes. The Sterling Background Check deployment was integrated with Workday HCM Recruitment and Onboarding modules and linked to candidate assessment and job board systems Logiserve and Broadbean to create an end to end recruitment and onboarding flow.
The implementation established a centralized global background screening platform that included an electronic I 9 process and a remote access notary network to support virtual workers. Sterling Background Check was configured to support standard background screening workflows typical of the BackGround Screening category, including identity verification and criminal, employment and education checks as part of pre hire validation and onboarding gating.
Operational architecture connected the Sterling Background Check platform to the core HCM instance to enable case initiation from recruitment workflows and status updates back into Workday recruitment and onboarding records. Integrations named in the program included Logiserve for candidate assessments and Broadbean as a job board aggregator, reflecting a systems approach that linked sourcing, assessment, screening and onboarding systems.
Governance and process work accompanied the technical build, with global background, recruitment and contingent labor policies created, vendor oversight and contract negotiations executed, and RFPs conducted to establish supplier relationships. The program was managed as part of broader Talent Solutions work that aligned recruiting operations, onboarding, contingent workforce management and people analytics to standardized screening policy and vendor management practices.
