In 2021, ANDREW an Amphenol company implemented Ansys Thermal Desktop to support thermal simulation and design validation for RF filters and antenna mechanical designs. Ansys Thermal Desktop was adopted as the primary Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) toolset within the Outdoor Wireless Networks division to address thermal dissipation and thermo-mechanical verification early in the design lifecycle.
The deployment emphasized steady state and transient heat transfer analysis, conjugate heat transfer, and coupled thermo-structural workflows leveraging ANSYS solvers. Configuration included parametric studies and automated batch solves to evaluate design variants, mesh and solver controls for RF-related enclosures, and generation of simulation artifacts for engineering review and documentation.
Operational coverage extended across Mechanical Engineering, R&D, and industrialization teams, supporting concept validation through mass production for outdoor wireless network products. The toolset was used alongside component industrialization activities such as die-casting and sheet metal optimization, and outputs were shared with suppliers during the prototyping and tooling phases.
Governance integrated simulation results into existing FMEA, tolerance analysis, and Design for Manufacturing and Design for Assembly processes, institutionalizing simulation-driven design reviews led by senior mechanical engineering leadership. As documented by engineering leadership, advanced ANSYS-based thermo-mechanical simulations contributed to drastically reducing prototyping iterations and production defects during product introductions.
