In 2025, AssemblyAI implemented Google Cloud Vertex AI within its Generative AI Platforms stack to support next-generation speech-to-text and speech understanding model development. AssemblyAI provisioned training infrastructure on Google Cloud using Vertex AI and tensor processing units for model training, while Kubernetes-based orchestration and Cloud Composer were configured to prepare and pipeline large volumes of audio for parallelized training and evaluation.
Operational integrations include Google Kubernetes Engine for container orchestration, Dataproc and Dataflow for large-scale data processing jobs, Cloud Composer for workflow orchestration, and Vertex AI for model evaluation and training orchestration. The configuration enabled on-demand scaling to thousands of nodes and GPUs or TPUs, supporting concurrent experiments and reducing bottlenecks that previously constrained research throughput.
Governance and process changes focused on researcher autonomy and data lineage, reducing engineering handoffs by providing researchers with self-service pipeline patterns via Cloud Composer and Kubernetes. AssemblyAI also instrumented audit, logging, and data lineage capabilities available in Google Cloud to track which datasets trained specific models, supporting compliance with data privacy and ownership requirements.
Explicit outcomes stated by AssemblyAI include a 75% reduction in data storage and infrastructure costs, a decrease in model evaluation time from 24 hours to about 20 minutes using Vertex AI, and an increase in data processing capacity and storage by more than 10 times, enabling training on billions-parameter models with pods of TPUs. The move accelerated model development cycles, including release of the Universal-2 model in under six months after the cloud implementation, and AssemblyAI cites ongoing operational support from the Google Cloud team for experiment ramp and troubleshooting.
