In 2017, Barclays Investment Bank UK implemented SAP S/4 HANA as its core ERP Financial platform to support Finance, Procurement, Real Estate and Human Capital Management streams. The engagement was led by a Lead Solution Architect responsible for identifying design choices and trade offs, proactively managing scope change implications and architectural risks across those streams.
The SAP S/4 HANA Finance implementation focused on core financial capabilities and integrated procurement and project reporting workflows, with explicit streams for Procurement, Real Estate and Human Capital Management. Projects included Supplier Relationship Management using Coupa Cloud Technology, SAP Concur Travel and Expenses as the T and E integration, a Real Estate Data Hub implemented using Python and Java on cloud and SQL technologies, and Capital Project Reporting Tools delivered with HTML5 and SQL. The solution design emphasized functional, data and deployment views to align SAP S/4 HANA finance processes with procurement requirements and capital reporting needs.
The deployment architecture was designed for cloud first hosting and operational resilience, with Cloud Solution Design work targeted at Amazon Web Services. Architectural artifacts included blueprints and a bill of materials identifying required cloud services such as EC2 and S3, a Virtual Private Cloud environment with server and storage instance sizing, subnets and availability zone placement, and VPN connectivity between regions and subnets. The integration strategy encompassed cloud native API product development for external and internal consumers, with an API product strategy oriented to AWS, Mulesoft and microservices, and explicit interfaces between the Real Estate Data Hub, Coupa SRM, SAP Concur and the SAP S/4 HANA finance instance.
Governance was formalized through architectural decision documentation and Design Authority oversight, documenting architecturally significant aspects across functional, data, testing, security, non functional and operational views. The Lead Solution Architect provided technical leadership to ensure compliance with enterprise standards and Minimum Enterprise Requirements, actively managed architectural risks and escalated critical issues to the CTO and programme steering committee, and acted as an interface to the S/4 HANA team to ensure procurement and other business function requirements were incorporated into the ERP Financial solution.
