In 2021, BayernLB implemented SAP S/4 HANA as an integrated ERP Financial platform to reorganize its management and control IT landscape. The programme replaced SAP ERP ECC 6.0 and consolidated key management and control functions onto SAP S/4 HANA, establishing a single core for finance and managerial reporting with the stated objective of reducing complexity and improving process support.
The deployment focused on core ERP Financial capabilities including general ledger, accounts payable and receivable, financial controlling, consolidation and reporting, and treasury related workflows, configured to support banking management and control use cases. SAP S/4 HANA was positioned to provide a simplified data model and high-performance database foundation to enable faster period end close, unified reporting, and centralized financial governance.
Architecturally the initiative created an integrated banking platform based on SAP S/4 HANA and high-performance IT infrastructure, with a migration path from SAP ERP ECC 6.0 into the new S/4 core. Contractual and organizational aspects of the programme included handling the spin-off of SAP Fioneer as an independent financial services unit outside the SAP Group, which informed contractual scopes and compliance boundaries.
A CMS legal team led by Philipp Lotze and Dr Michael Kraus advised BayernLB on drafting and negotiating agreements, with particular emphasis on compliance with banking supervisory law and data protection law. The reorganisation targeted bank-wide management and control functions and aimed to cut total costs by deploying the high-performance infrastructure, while governance updates and contractual restructuring underpinned regulatory and data protection compliance.
