In 2021, Berner Kantonalbank implemented the Ethereum Platform as its Blockchain Platform to underpin SME|X, a marketplace for tokenized small-cap equities. The initiative was driven by a strategic mandate to explore tokenization and create a marketable trading venue for unlisted SMEs, with SME|X going live on December 1, 2021.
The project began with a technical evaluation and a proof of concept that verified which existing trading components were reusable. Order entry and inventory management systems were retained and adapted to connect to the Ethereum Platform, while a test on the BEKB environment demonstrated real-time trading of 100 tokenized shares of a fictitious issuer via iOS and Android apps. This POC confirmed the technical feasibility and informed the product specification and requirements for production partners.
Deployment architecture integrated the Ethereum Platform with third party technology providers and secure hardware modules. daura was used as the technology platform for tokenization of share capital, Taurus supplied the High Secure module procured through Hypothekarbank Lenzburg, and DXC acted as the IT provider to implement the backend connectivity and operational hosting components. The implementation focused on orchestration between existing trading systems and blockchain settlement layers, plus mobile front-end connectivity for order flow and inventory updates.
Innofactory managed the BEKB strategic project, coordinating internal Legal and IT Security teams and preparing regulatory engagement with FINMA. Governance activities included structured product documentation, Business Model Canvas and Value Proposition Canvas workshops with business stakeholders, and stakeholder coordination across IT, legal, and external partners. The project team launched SME|X on December 1, 2021 in compliance with regulatory requirements, delivering a live marketplace that enables tokenization and trading of equity securities via the Ethereum Platform.
