The deployment was positioned to support onboarding, I 9 verification and regulatory compliance with the Gun Control Act of 1968, with explicit use of E Verify as part of screening and verification procedures.
Configuration and functional scope emphasized criminal and employment verification workflows, electronic I 9 and E Verify checks, and orchestration of drug screening logistics. Sterling Background Check was used to manage candidate screening queues, document chain of custody for on site oral swab tests, and capture verification results for inclusion in employee personnel files, aligning with standard background screening capabilities in the BackGround Screening category.
Integrations tied the Sterling Background Check implementation into Cabela’s broader HR technology landscape, exchanging candidate and new hire data with BrassRing recruiting and Workday onboarding, and routing drug test orders and results through LabCorp and Quest electronic chains. Screening artifacts and compliant records were uploaded to LaserFiche for on site file retention, and screening status was referenced alongside Kronos scheduling and Workday HRIS workflows to support hiring decisions and attendance onboarding processes.
Governance for the Sterling Background Check rollout included on site compliant file keeping, procedural coordination with benefits and leave teams for FMLA and workers compensation intake, and routine HR audits to ensure verification and training completion. Operational ownership rested with HR coordinators supporting store hiring and onboarding, with workflows designed to ensure screening, I 9 completion, and secure record retention within existing HR operational processes.

In 2016, Cabela’s implemented Microsoft Power BI to design and develop all HR areas of a business intelligence solution. This initiative was scoped under Analytics and BI to consolidate HR reporting, dashboards, and data staging for human resources functions.
The implementation delivered Microsoft SQL based databases and ETL pipelines, together with Power BI reports and interactive dashboards. Functional modules addressed core HR analytics including workforce headcount and composition, payroll reconciliation feeds, benefits utilization, recruiting and talent metrics, and HR operational reporting, with the full application name Microsoft Power BI used for visualization and self-service reporting.
Architecturally the solution centralized HR source data into Microsoft SQL data structures, with ETL processes standardizing and staging transactional feeds for reporting. Governance practices emphasized a common HR data model, role based access to Power BI content, and a managed report catalog to support HR and People Operations stakeholders within Cabela’s.
