In 2016, Canal de Panama implemented GeneXus BPM Suite to digitize mission-critical maritime operations, using Business Process Management to modernize reservation and inspection workflows. The project targeted operational processes including tug scheduling, transit slot reservations, vessel admeasurement and inspections while enabling online bookings for vessel transit management.
The deployment was developed by a seven person internal team using GeneXus, building workflow orchestration, process automation, form-driven inspection workflows and reservation booking modules inside GeneXus BPM Suite. Functional capabilities implemented included tug scheduling engines, transit slot reservation workflows, vessel admeasurement calculators and inspection workflow management, with automation of routine tasks and exception routing aligned to maritime operations.
Operational coverage emphasized support for the Canal expansion program and regional transit operations, extending to operations and scheduling teams responsible for vessel transits and onboard inspections. The implementation leveraged GeneXus BPM Suite native workflow orchestration and online booking interfaces to digitize end-to-end operational steps and to centralize reservation and inspection processing.
Governance and rollout were managed in house by the seven person team, embedding inspection and reservation workflow governance into existing operational procedures and converting manual booking steps into automated process flows. The GeneXus BPM Suite deployment delivered faster, more reliable reservation and inspection workflows and produced measurable operational and revenue benefits during the Canal's expansion program.
