CAF Technographics, Software Purchases, AI and Digital Transformation Initiatives
Discover the latest software purchases and digital transformation initiatives being undertaken by CAF and its business and technology executives. Each quarter our research team identifies on-prem and cloud applications that are being used by the 14526 CAF employees from the public (Press Releases, Customer References, Testimonials, Case Studies and Success Stories) and proprietary sources.
During our research, we have identified that CAF has purchased the following applications: SAP S/4 HANA for ERP Financial in 2020, HxGN EAM (Ex. Infor EAM) for Enterprise Asset Management in 2012, SAP Business Data Cloud for Analytics and BI in 2025 and the related IT decision-makers and key stakeholders.
Our database provides customer insight and contextual information on which enterprise applications and software systems CAF is running and its propensity to invest more and deepen its relationship with SAP , Hexagon , Microsoft or identify new suppliers as part of their overall Digital and IT transformation projects to stay competitive, fend off threats from disruptive forces, or comply with internal mandates to improve overall enterprise efficiency.
We have been analyzing CAF revenues, which have grown to $3.44 billion in 2024, plus its IT budget and roadmap, cloud software purchases, aggregating massive amounts of data points that form the basis of our forecast assumptions for CAF intention to invest in emerging technologies such as AI, Machine Learning, IoT, Blockchain, Autonomous Database or in cloud-based ERP, HCM, CRM, EPM, Procurement or Treasury applications.

In 2020, CAF implemented SAP S/4 HANA as its ERP Financial application. The program was managed by a CAF project manager who began oversight in May 2019 and continued through the rollout, with explicit responsibility for the Rail Services business.
The deployment focused on core financial modules configured to support General Ledger, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Asset Accounting and Controlling. SAP S/4 HANA was configured to enable period end close orchestration, statutory reporting workflows and ledger and cost center accounting aligned to group accounting policies.
Operational scope covered the CAF group with explicit inclusion of the Rail Services business, aligning transactional finance and accounting processes across business units. Governance was centralized under CAF project management, with process harmonization and a standardized chart of accounts implemented to support consolidated financial operations.
The implementation positions SAP S/4 HANA as the enterprise backbone for ERP Financial functions at CAF, instrumenting core finance, accounting and controlling capabilities and establishing project level governance for ongoing operations. The deployment used SAP S/4 HANA standard financial configuration and a modular design to allow subsequent extensions and functional scaling.

In 2012, CAF implemented HxGN EAM (Ex. Infor EAM) as its Enterprise Asset Management system to support CMMS functions for rolling stock and maintenance operations. The deployment centered on a CMMS management computer system located in Madrid, Spain, and was governed from CAF's Information Systems Area.
CAF's implementation of HxGN EAM (Ex. Infor EAM) encompassed core Enterprise Asset Management capabilities including asset registry, work order management, preventive maintenance planning and spare parts inventory control, aligned with typical CMMS workflows. A Development Project Manager role was staffed to manage, validate and perform maintenance of custom developments, coordinating directly with the vendor Hexagon and the system provider.
Technical requirements and governance included Oracle database knowledge and Java and Javascript development expertise, reflecting an architecture that combined configurable HxGN EAM application modules with custom code and database integration. Rollout and ongoing delivery used agile software project management practices, required national and international travel for stakeholder coordination, and operated across maintenance and industrial engineering functions within CAF.

In 2025 CAF implemented SAP Business Data Cloud in the Analytics and BI category to join train telemetry and operational data with business process data, enabling AI-driven predictive maintenance and faster engineering-to-operations decisions across Spain and globally. The deployment positioned SAP Business Data Cloud as the enterprise analytics layer for maintenance, engineering and operations workflows at Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles. SAP acted as system integrator for the program.
The implementation explicitly modernized SAP BW with SAP Datasphere as part of Business Data Cloud, introducing a zero-copy analytics architecture to reduce data movement and preserve source system fidelity. Functional capabilities deployed include enterprise data modeling, a consolidated semantic layer for operational and business process data, and instrumented pipelines to support AI-ready feature sets for predictive maintenance and engineering analytics.
CAF integrated SAP Databricks with SAP Business Data Cloud to provide scalable analytics compute and to improve data quality and time-to-insight. The architecture links train telemetry and operational telemetry streams with transactional and maintenance process data, enabling combined analytics without wholesale data duplication and supporting downstream AI model training and inference workflows.
Operational scope covered engineering, maintenance and operations teams with a global rollout originating in Spain, and governance was updated to enforce unified data definitions and quality controls across SAP Datasphere and the Databricks layer. The project explicitly improved data quality and reduced time-to-insight, aligning CAF SAP Business Data Cloud Analytics and BI with business functions in maintenance and engineering to accelerate decisions between engineering and operations.
