| Microsoft | Legacy | Microsoft Power BI | Analytics and BI | Analytics and BI | n/a | 2016 | 2018 |
In 2016 Dallas Zoo implemented Microsoft Power BI for Analytics and BI. The deployment was built on a Microsoft SQL Server 2016 based data warehouse hosted on Microsoft Azure, which synchronizes RFID data daily and links to five other data sources to provision inputs for Power BI analysis and reporting services running in Azure.
The Microsoft Power BI implementation provides cloud hosted reporting and dashboarding capabilities, with dashboards delivered to PCs, tablets, and Apple watches to support handlers working in exhibits, proposed visitor information kiosks, and remote access for staff such as Scott. The RFID system had been enhanced in 2015 with components of the Microsoft cloud, with financial support from the UTD Venture Development Center and technical expertise from US Medical IT, supplying the primary telemetry feed consumed by Microsoft Power BI.
Operational scope covers animal care and visitor engagement business functions, with daily ETL orchestration into the SQL Server 2016 data warehouse and Azure based Power BI services to enable role based visualization and operational awareness. Governance and operational controls focus on scheduled data synchronization and centralized cloud reporting, with integrations explicitly limited to the RFID feed and the five other stated data sources feeding the Analytics and BI environment.
