In 2021, Emirates NBD in the United Arab Emirates implemented IDEMIA GREENPAY. The bank deployed IDEMIA GREENPAY as a Card Personalization solution to issue the UAE's first eco friendly payment card, aligning card issuance with a broader retail banking sustainability positioning and responding to high consumer environmental awareness reported by Boston Consulting Group.
The deployment centered on card personalization and production capabilities that substitute conventional materials with recycled components, IDEMIA GREENPAY cards are manufactured using over 85% recycled PVC derived from production waste. Implementation covered personalization workflows typical of Card Personalization programs, including card material selection, physical printing and finishing, data-driven personalization control, and encoding and sealing processes associated with bank card issuance.
The program was provisioned into Emirates NBD card issuance and fulfillment operations serving retail banking customers across the UAE, integrating the GREENPAY personalization line into existing issuance and fulfillment workflows and channels. Operational ownership focused on retail banking and card operations, with IDEMIA supplying the GREENPAY card stock and the manufacturing personalization process.
Governance emphasized sustainability objectives and product positioning rather than technical migration, with Emirates NBD presenting the eco friendly card to strengthen its market leadership in payment cards. IDEMIA’s membership in the Greener Payment Partnership and the use of IDEMIA GREENPAY support the bank’s stated aim to provide customers with more sustainable payment products and to reduce first use PVC in card manufacturing.

In 2023, Emirates NBD began a coordinated program to pilot Microsoft 365 Copilot as part of a broader adoption of Generative AI Platforms across the bank. Emirates NBD, a leading banking group in the MENAT region, announced this initiative in partnership with Microsoft and with implementation support from McKinsey & Company, positioning Microsoft 365 Copilot as a core productivity layer for enterprise users.
The program includes three articulated signals of implementation. The first is broad enablement of software engineering, where more than a thousand developers at Emirates NBD are being equipped with GitHub Copilot X to accelerate code generation, reduce iteration time, and improve software quality. The second signal is the organizational pilot of Microsoft 365 Copilot, scoped to automate repetitive tasks, generate content, and assist complex decision making for knowledge workers, embedding the Microsoft 365 Copilot application into everyday collaboration and productivity workflows.
The third signal is conversational AI deployment, with ChatGPT use cases launched across business and support functions including Contact Centers, Marketing, Legal, Compliance, and Risk. Practical readiness activities were conducted through a generative AI hackathon that blended business and IT teams with experts from Microsoft, McKinsey & Company, and Quantum Black, producing hands on insights into prompt engineering, dataset preparation, and model fine tuning that directly inform operational rollout.
Governance and rollout sequencing are being informed by hackathon outputs, with the bank aligning IT enablement, data preparation practices, and business process change to support safe production usage of generative models. Emirates NBD frames these deployments to advance personalized customer engagement, internal productivity, and innovation, while McKinsey & Company is reported as a consulting partner supporting implementation and capability design.
