In 2016, Georgia Department of Education implemented Microsoft Power BI to establish an Analytics and BI capability for enterprise reporting and decision support. The deployment was scoped as an enterprise BI reporting and analytics effort, with staff participating in requirement analysis, Agile SDLC design and development activities and in RFP creation and vendor scoring criterion for Enterprise BI Reporting & Analytics Platform acquisition.
The implementation included end to end data preparation and visualization work using Microsoft Power BI, Power Query and Power View, with visual artifacts such as charts, line charts, pie charts, maps, tiles, cards, images, tables, bubble and scatter charts and key performance indicator visuals. Development activity produced T-SQL objects including functions, tables, views, triggers, indexes, constraints and both dynamic and static stored procedures to support a Decision Engine, and Power BI reports were parameterized with drill through and drill down behavior for month over month account reporting.
Data integration and platform architecture were grounded in Microsoft data platform components, including SQL Server 2005, 2008R2 and 2012, SSIS for ETL orchestration, SSRS for paginated reporting and SSAS for multidimensional analysis. SSIS packages were developed, monitored and deployed to support dynamic ETL flows, full and incremental loads, parameterized connection manager files for QA and production execution and exports to Access, text and Excel, while SSAS OLAP cubes were created to analyze multidimensional fact and dimension models including detailed measure groups and dimensions such as Loan Position, Commitment Schedule, Loan Journal Entry, Time Period, Account, Portfolio, Property and Borrower.
Governance and operational controls were implemented through Agile SDLC processes, batch logging and error logging tables, event handler error management and TFS based lifecycle management. The team also configured SQL mail agent automation and built SSIS control flow tasks and data flow tasks to enforce load patterns, and participated in vendor selection activities for master data management, data platform and BI reporting systems to define enterprise acquisition criteria.
