| SAP | SAP ERP ECC 6.0 | SAP S/4 HANA | ERP Financial | ERP | n/a | 2024 | 2024 |
In 2024 imec migrated from SAP ERP ECC 6.0 to SAP S/4 HANA as its ERP Financial platform, initiating a brownfield upgrade to preserve existing configurations and custom extensions. The organisation had operated the same SAP implementation for twenty years and chose a brownfield approach to accelerate compliance with current SAP technology while limiting disruption to incumbent business processes.
The brownfield migration upgraded the core ERP stack without abandoning existing structures, enabling imec to retain its bespoke SAP applications and replatform to the SAP S/4 HANA architecture. As part of the migration imec moved from on premise hardware to cloud infrastructure and transitioned its on premise Open Text deployment to a cloud model, positioning SAP S/4 HANA and associated content services on a cloud operating layer.
The program used sandbox migrations, cloning production into test environments to validate the conversion path and reveal functional gaps, with the initial sandbox run surfacing twenty gaps. A second sandbox iteration was executed to remediate as many gaps as possible, while teams assessed alternatives including tighter integration of existing SAP applications or targeted change management activities to address residual issues.
Governance emphasized pragmatic project controls and transparent communication to minimize organizational change management, reflecting brownfield characteristics of lower disruption. The migration resulted in a successful conversion to SAP S/4 HANA, replatforming imec’s ERP Financial footprint and preserving custom capabilities while moving core systems and content services to the cloud.
