In 2014, Jumbo Maritime implemented ORTEC Routing Suite as part of a Transportation Management initiative to standardize operations and enable data-driven decision making in heavy lift shipping and offshore transport and installation. The deployment targeted coordination across planning, operations and commercial teams to improve voyage estimation, scheduling and pricing accuracy.
The implementation delivered a data backbone serving as a single source of truth and a co-created Smart Scheduling module, described as a voyage estimation scheduling and management solution. Functional capabilities implemented included schedule optimization, combined-load proposals, sailing speed optimization based on loading and unloading windows, and routing algorithms aimed at reducing empty miles.
ORTEC Routing Suite was instrumented to consolidate operational inputs across Planning & Forecasting and Routing & Loading business areas, providing a central dataset to support future smart applications. The platform made realistic and up-to-date sailing schedules available to cross-departmental stakeholders, exposing discrepancies between planning and actuals for faster reconciliation and decision making.
The rollout followed an Agile proof-of-concept and co-creation model guided by a digital roadmap and an analytics roadmap to sequence capabilities and sustain change. ORTEC advised on organizational adoption and supported Jumbo Maritime in attracting data-minded talent to embed the new Transportation Management workflows and improve cross-functional cooperation.
Reported outcomes include improved ability to set more competitive transportation prices, reduced empty miles through smart algorithms, fuel savings via optimized navigation speeds, and improved cooperation and reliability across departments, which reduced unplanned disappointing results. ORTEC Routing Suite now serves as the operational core for Jumbo Maritime's Transportation Management and for the continued development of smart scheduling and analytics capabilities.
