In 2020, Kennametal implemented SAP S/4 HANA as its enterprise financial and operations backbone. The SAP S/4 HANA deployment targeted ERP Financial capabilities across manufacturing, supply chain, engineering and plant operations, building on Kennametal's 25 year history running SAP ERP.
Deployment architecture centered on SAP Manufacturing Integration and Intelligence as the foundational layer to collect, consolidate and present real-time shop floor data to corporate systems. SAP S/4 HANA was configured to leverage embedded ERP capabilities including quality management and plant maintenance modules, while SAP PLM was used to unify product design information, manufacturing parameters, inspection plans, tooling and fixturing data.
Integrations included a structured data flow between Siemens NX and SAP PLM and classification systems to deliver digitized drawings and process data to the factory floor, enabling automated manufacturing routings defined by engineering and technical governance. The implementation began with initial smart factory pilot plants and was planned to scale learnings to additional factories, providing operational coverage from shop floor to corporate planning across Kennametal's global manufacturing footprint.
Governance and process changes accompanied the technical rollout, guided by Kennametal's four pillar smart factory framework that includes machinery and automation, skillsets and resources, operational excellence and IT/OT systems integration as connective tissue. Operational excellence programs were emphasized to ensure teams convert real-time data into proactive decision making and to redefine work structures and skills needed for optimized production.
The combined SAP S/4 HANA, SAP MII and SAP PLM stack increased visibility across production scheduling, manpower allocation, components and materials availability, enabling optimized production schedules and reported increases in throughput and operational efficiencies driven by real-time decision making and tighter quality controls.

In 2015, Kennametal implemented SAP SuccessFactors Compensation as its Compensation Management solution. The deployment targeted enterprise compensation processes for Kennametal, a manufacturing company with approximately 9,500 employees headquartered in the United States, and was provisioned to support structured pay cycle planning and manager-driven award workflows.
Configuration focused on core Compensation Management capabilities within SAP SuccessFactors Compensation, including merit increase planning, variable pay and bonus planning, budget allocation, pay-for-performance calibration, and compensation matrix configuration. The implementation leveraged role-based approval workflows, template-driven award communications, and plan administration tools to support auditability and HR plan controls.
Operational coverage emphasized HR administrators, compensation managers, and people leaders who execute annual and cycle-based pay processes, with system controls aligning manager submissions and HR review. Reporting and administration features were configured to maintain plan records and support calibration sessions using the application s native plan reporting and administration interfaces.
Governance centered on HR-led plan administration with defined approval roles, calibration workflows, and budget controls to standardize compensation decisioning. Change management included manager training for award submission and HR administrator training for ongoing plan configuration and administration.

In 2016, Kennametal deployed Microsoft Power BI as a cloud-focused Analytics and BI implementation to extend self-service analytics across the enterprise. The initiative was designed to provide cloud-based access to sophisticated analytics and project data for up to 12,000 employees working across multiple geographies, aligning Microsoft Power BI with corporate reporting and project intelligence workflows.
Microsoft Power BI was configured to surface natural-language query and interactive visualization capabilities so business users can visualize information in minutes and explore data without specialized help. The deployment emphasized self-service business intelligence, enabling users to draw insights directly from existing Excel notebooks and to produce visual analysis and dashboards for project and operational data.
Operational coverage included broad business user populations and project teams across Kennametal’s global footprint, with Microsoft Power BI used to centralize analytical access rather than requiring bespoke filters or heavy BI-team intervention. Integration points explicitly included existing Excel workbooks as a source for analytics, and the implementation supported rapid ad hoc exploration and visualization of project-level datasets.
Governance and rollout centered on enabling wider adoption and accessibility, moving toward a cloud-based delivery model that scaled to the broader employee base. Steven Hanna, Vice President and Chief Information Officer at Kennametal, reported immediate improvement, noting “Power BI has natural-language query, which is something you don’t get with Tableau. With Tableau, you have to build your own filters for queries,” and he added that “Power BI is just way more fun,” reflecting perceived usability and accessibility gains among users.
