In 2017, KLM, Inc implemented VeloCloud VMware NSX SD-WAN to rearchitect wide area connectivity across its U.S. construction and real estate site footprint, using a cloud-delivered SD-WAN model. The SD-WAN deployment leveraged NSX SD-WAN transport agnosticism to integrate quickly into existing network infrastructures and to enable centralization of servers and applications into Microsoft Azure without requiring a dedicated VPN tunnel.
The implementation used a cloud-delivered orchestration plane with edge virtual appliances and site-level transport aggregation, configured to support carrier and MPLS contracts alongside broadband links. KLM provisioned two 100MB circuits at its largest site and a single 100MB broadband line at each smaller site, and configured policy-based application steering, WAN optimization, and centralized connectivity controls to prioritize large file transfers and inter-site traffic.
VeloCloud VMware NSX SD-WAN was integrated directly with Microsoft Azure as a cloud on-ramp, enabling systems centralization on Azure and direct platform connectivity without initiating dedicated VPN tunnels. Operational coverage focused on inter-site WAN connectivity and cloud access, affecting infrastructure, application hosting, and network operations functions across KLM sites where the two-circuit and single-circuit configurations were applied.
Rollout and governance emphasized centralized orchestration and transport-agnostic provisioning to accelerate deployment, and network procurement shifted to new carrier and MPLS contracts to support higher bandwidth profiles. The first observable outcome was a marked increase in bandwidth and transmission speed, with initial peak utilization while terabyte-sized file transfers completed, followed by a decline to steady state utilization levels as systems and traffic patterns stabilized.
