Amazon Web Services (AWS) Legacy Amazon SimpleDB Database Management IaaS n/a 2009 2009
In 2009 Livemocha implemented Amazon SimpleDB as a core Database Management component for its global online language learning community. The deployment targeted storage and query of user and learning data metadata to support user profiles, activity records, and multi language learning state across the platform. The implementation configured Amazon SimpleDB to hold lightweight, schema flexible metadata used in session lookups and progress queries, aligning with typical Database Management workflows for high read volume metadata. Amazon SimpleDB was used to index and query user attributes, course progress markers, and interaction metadata, enabling application-level routing and metadata driven feature flags. Amazon SimpleDB was deployed alongside Amazon EC2, Amazon S3, Amazon SQS and Amazon CloudFront, forming an integrated stack where EC2 handled application compute, S3 stored content assets, SQS managed asynchronous processing, and CloudFront delivered static content. Operational coverage spanned Livemocha s global service footprint and supported millions of users and dozens of languages, with the database tier focused on low latency metadata access for learning services and community features. The implementation reduced operational overhead and delivered an estimated cost savings of approximately $10,000 per month while enabling scale to millions of users and dozens of languages. Amazon SimpleDB served as the Database Management element that centralized metadata queries and simplified operational management of user and learning data.
